How Do We Talk About Issues That Matter?

How do we talk about issues that matter? Discussing issues that go on in the world can be a very controversial topic for most people. Sometimes, it is hard for people to voice their opinions. When people talk about things that they believe in, sometimes others that have different opinions will shut down the other persons opinion. They do this because they do not agree with what the other person is saying. It is important that we listen to other people's opinions, even if we do not agree or understand them. Beth Strano wrote in  "Untitled Poem", "There is no such thing as a 'safe space'- We exist in the real world. We all carry scars and have caused wounds." (Strano) We all should be understanding of each others beliefs and views, because sometimes people's beliefs are based on their history. If every person became more understanding and listened to views that they do not understand, the world could become a much better place.

At the end of "Untitled Poem", Beth Strano wrote "This space will not be perfect. It will not always be what we wish it to be but it will be our space together, and we will work on it side by side." (Strano) The end of the poem shows that even though at the beginning of the poem she said there are no safe spaces, that if we work together we could create a space that everyone can be themselves. Talking about issues that are important are a great way to spread awareness for certain topics. We should always be able to talk about things that matter to us. The golden line that I found from "Untitled Poem" by Beth Strano is, "This space seeks to turn down the volume of the world outside, and amplify voices that have to fight to be heard elsewhere." (Strano)
